Milestones

In 1965, at the height of Japan's economic boom, Masatake Shiga founded Shiga International Patent Office.  As the Japanese industry and economy developed, the protection of intellectual property rights became vitally important to the success of Japanese companies.  Along with this economic growth, the number of patent applications filed at the JPO has doubled since 1965, and Shiga International Patent Office has grown accordingly and continues to play a major role in the protection of intellectual property rights.


1965 Masatake Shiga founds Shiga Patent Office.
1967 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) established.
1970 Shiga Patent Office renamed as Shiga International Patent Office.
1974 Relocation to new building in front of Tokyo station.
1974 European Patent Convention established.
1975 Japan joins WIPO.
1993 Relocation to our own building in Takadanobaba, Tokyo.
1995 World Trade Organization established.
2003 Relocation to Yaesu, Tokyo.
2007 Relocation to GranTokyo South Tower, Marunouchi, Tokyo.
